The Bravade tradition of June 15, known as the “Spanish Bravado” commemorates a battle that took place exactly 380 years ago… On June 15, 1637. 21 Spanish galleys (A galley is a type of ship that is propelled mainly by rowing. The galley is characterized by its long, slender hull, shallow draft and low freeboard (clearance between sea and railing) … Galleys were the warships used by the early Mediterranean naval powers, including the Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans.) attempted to storm the city. Despite their lack of soldiers, the Tropezians managed the feat of repelling the enemy. It is in memory of this heroic act and to praise the courage of its inhabitants and combatants, that Saint-Tropez has not failed to commemorate the Spanish Bravado for nearly four centuries.
